knee update

So today I had a 2 week followup with my doctor about my knee. (my "real" doctor, not the 1st doctor I saw at the immediate care facility) At my first visit he did a physical and ordered some blood work to try to figure out the pain and check my cholesterol, etc. The immediate care doctor diagnosed my knee as prepatellar bursitis but one of the blood tests was to check for indications of inflammation or infection, indicative of bursitis. There was no indication of either so he disagreed with the bursitis diagnosis. He believes the pain I've had for 12 years is just residual pain from Osgood Schlatter disease and the swellng was caused by some mechanical reason, like injuring the knee (or maybe from playing basketball the saturday before it swelled up.) He also said that my cholesterol levels are great, that Americans usually don't have the numbers I have and that it should probably stay about the same unless I put on a bunch of weight. I told him I'm hoping to take off the weight I've put on in the last four months. So I'm even more motivated to lose that 30lbs so I don't have bad cholesterol later in life. (I'll probably be dispensing cholesterol/blood pressure medication in the future, doesn't mean I want to take it myself)

So as you must already know, we got a new computer this week and we've been very pleased with it. Right now we have it in our living room and during the day we leave it turned off and unplugged so Jaron can't mess with it. Tonight, after a long evening, we come home and try to turn on the computer. It turns on for a bit then shuts it self off, without even getting to the windows loading screen. We try probably about a dozen times, unplugging everything, checking connections, trying the power cord from the old tower, etc. Sometimes it wouldn't even get past the intial blue HP boot up screen, sometimes it would ask to start up in system recovery mode or safe mode, one time it turned off after entering our password before we could hit the "enter" key. We get freakin out and I pull out the trouble shooting and support guides to figure it out. It said something about a line voltage switch that should be automatically set to the country's voltage in which it was sold. and if you mess with it, it could ruin the hard drive and void any warranties. I notice a little orange switch next to the power cord that says 230. I unplug the cord and flip the switch out of curiosity and notice the other side of the switch says 115. I thought I remember something about the voltage in the US being around 120 or so and that internationally its higher so I start freakin out trying to figure out if that really is the switch. I look at our old tower and, sure enough, that switch is set to 115. So I start calling customer support to see what its supposed to be set at and what happens if its not set correctly. As I'm calling, Corrina suggests flipping the switch and seeing if it works. We're both thinking we totally fried our computer with a supercharge of electricity and that we'll have to buy a new one. It starts up seemingly fine and the customer support says its suposed to be set to 115 but there's a built in circuit breaker that should have prevented the supercharge from doing any damage but he walks me through the steps to discharge any static electricity that may have built up inside the box. Fortunately everything is fine, but Corrina and I are just both amazed how Jaron managed to flip that tiny little switch intentionally or accidentally and we're both super thankful that everything is fine.

New Computer

So we bought a new computer the other day because we were so sick and tired of how slow it was. granted, we still only have dial-up internet, but its still faster than it was. Our computer was approximately 10 years old with an INtel 700mHz processor (single-core)and 256MB of RAM. Our new computer has an AMD 2.6 GHZ dual-core processor with 320GB.
We also bought this software package to easily tranfser our old files, settings, and programs over but to run it we had to download all high priority updates from microsoft.com first. That literally took all night. Then the next night we made the transfer and started erasing the old computer so there was absolutely no information on it when we recycle it. We started running that program at midnight and it didn't finish up til around 3:30PM and remember, it only had 256MB of RAM and only a 14GB hard drive. Can you imagine how long it would take to delete the hard disk if it was bigger? And its friggin' amazing how quiet the new tower is. You can hardly tell it's even turned on. So thats the new computer. I'm not trying to brag or anything, I'm just excited that we finally got reid of our old one. I've been wanting to take it to a shooting range for quite some time because it was so frustrating to use.

knee pain

Few of you probably know about the mild pain I've had in my knee since 8th grade. For the last week or so it started hurting like a bruise but none was visible. Monday morning I woke up and it was swollen the size of a grapefruit. Last night I went to immediate care and was diagnosed with prepatellar bursitis. That's an inflammation of the fluid sacs that lubricate joints. Today I saw another doctor and he ordered some labs to see if it will need to be drained. I'm supposed to keep it wrapped and elevate/ice it several times a day. I also discovered that I've put 30lbs back on since I stopped riding my bike a year ago. The dr said that studies have shown that losing just 15lbs decreases knee pain symptoms by 50percent. I guess this is motivation to start riding again.

it really sucks not having high speed internet. last week we had to disconnet cable and hispeed b/c C's mom went home. therefore we went back to our free dialup. i'm currently blogging from our new palm centro smart phone. please keep guessing at the movie quote game. i'll try to update the correct answers when I can.
